Owner and Winemaker, Nick Goldschmidt

Nick Goldschmidt was born and educated in New Zealand and trained in Australia.  In 1989, after spending 18 months of winemaking in Australia, New Zealand, California and South America, Nick returned to California with an amazing range of winemaking experience.  In 1990, Nick and his wife Yolyn settled down in Healdsburg, California becoming Simi’s Chief Winemaker and then Vice President in 1996.  In 1998 Nick and Yolyn established their own line of wines with the release of Goldschmidt Vineyards and Forefathers, with the goal of focusing on site specific vineyards from around the world. Having produced so many world-class wines around the globe, Nick knew exactly the vineyard sites he would choose for his wines.  The wines are all single vineyards, 100% varietal, handcraft, small production artisan wines. Learn more about Nick’s background here.

Joined periodically in the field by their five children, the Goldschmidt expertise is being passed down to the next generation, as evidenced in the wines released under the labels Chelsea Goldschmidt, Hilary Goldschmidt and Katherine Goldschmidt.

“Winemaking has been a passion that has fueled our dreams and enriched our lives. Even our children have become involved, whether by pitching in during harvest and crush or by helping pack “dad’s” bags as I head off to New Zealand and Argentina several times a year” – Nick Goldschmidt

Virtual Wine Tasting Cline Cellars

Built on a passion for winemaking and rooted in respect for the land, Cline Cellars is a family-owned and operated winery in Sonoma, California. In 1982, Fred Cline started making his first vintages from original plantings of Mourvedre, Zinfandel and Carignan, some of which dated back to the 1880’s. As one of the original Rhône Rangers, he began planting varietals that included vineyards dedicated to Syrah, Viognier and Marsanne and Roussanne.  Fred and his wife Nancy have continued to plant vineyards across Sonoma County.

Winemaker Charlie Tsegeletos

Charlie Tsegeletos, Winemaker

Charlie was born to be a winemaker. There was always wine in his Greek/Italian household in northern California, and his great-grandfather made wine in Guerneville in the 1930s. Charlie graduated from UC Davis in 1979 with a degree in Agricultural Science and Management/Plant Science, and honed his craft at Hacienda Wine Cellars, D’Agostini Winery, and Glen Ellen Winery. Since joining Cline Cellars in 2002, he has created legendary Zinfandels, distinctive Rhône-style wines, and Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, Merlot and Chardonnay. Charlie loves making wines that express the unique qualities of California fruit, and their specific sense of place. His mission is the creation of wines that surprise and delight the senses. Charles Smith Wines, Washington

Please join us, as we Taste, Learn and Enjoy these ‘rockin’ wines from Charles Smith.  We’ll be tasting through several of his labels.  Be sure to RSVP at your local WineStyles location or reserve tickets on Eventbrite.com

Located in Walla Walla, Charles Smith opened his first winery, K Vintners.  His first release, K Syrah, initiated the style of winemaking that Charles continues today: small lots of single vineyard Syrahs and field blends of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo, and Viognier, all of which are hand-picked, fermented with naturally occurring yeasts and basket pressed.

In 2008, his K Vintners was recognized by Wine & Spirits magazine as one of the “Best New Wineries of the Last Ten Years,” and as “Winery of the Year” in the annual wine buying guide. His wines continue to receive recognition from wine publications such as Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and Wine & Spirits with 98 scores of 95 points and above, and 386 scores of 90 points and above.

Winemaker Charles Smith is the only person to have received Winemaker of the Year distinctions by both Wine Enthusiast (2014) and Food & Wine (2009).

ABOUT THE WINEMAKER

Growing up just outside of Sacramento, California, Charles Smith began craving worldly travel at a young age.  In 1989 Charles decided to move to Denmark and spent nine years managing rock bands and concert tours throughout Europe. Wining and dining on the road ultimately triggered the career he has today. In 1999, he moved back to the States, landing in the Pacific Northwest. He opened up a wine shop on Bainbridge Island, just across the Puget Sound from downtown Seattle.  On a road trip, he passed through the small town of Walla Walla and met a French winemaker. The two men discovered their common passion for great Syrah and Charles was convinced to move to Walla Walla and make his own juice. December 2001, Charles released his first wine, 330 cases of the 1999 K Syrah. The Walla Walla Valley was now his home.

Wines of Substance
In 2017, he unveiled a new name for his international company and vast portfolio – Wines of Substance.
SIXTO: The Chardonnay-only label from Charles Smith and Brennon Leighton. Inspired by the story of musician Sixto Rodriguez, Charles similarly wanted to resurrect something that was always great, but was waiting to be rediscovered – as in the old Chardonnay vines in Washington State. Being the sixth label that Charles created (sextus translates to “sixth” in Latin), the name SIXTO was a perfect fit.
Substance Wines

SUBSTANCE: The newest chapter in history books of Charles Smith and his wines.   With a single-minded vision to produce the best value-priced Cabernet Sauvignon, Substance label was born.  Using traditional winemaking, natural fermentations and barrel-aging, each wine is made in small batches ensuring integrity.

Casasmith winesViNO CASASMITH: Italian inspired and locally produced, ViNO was created by Charles Smith in 2010 with the inaugural release of a 100% Pinot Grigio. This is in keeping with the vision of producing Italian varietals with the same integrity as they would be produced in Italy. Hand-made wines that are a great value and delicious to drink.

Antinori Family

Since 1385, the Antinori family has been committed to the art of winemaking.  Over 600 hundred years ago, Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri”, the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild.  For twenty-six generations, the Antinori family has managed the business directly making innovative and sometimes bold decisions while upholding the utmost respect for traditions and the environment.

ANTINORI WINERY, ITALY

Each vintage and each plot of land is a new pursuit for achieving higher quality standards for Antinori. As Marchese Piero loves to say: “Ancient family roots play an important part in our philosophy but they have never hindered our innovative spirit.

ANCIENT FAMILY ROOTS

The family’s historical heritage lies in their estates in Tuscany and Umbria, however over the years they have invested in many other areas, both in Italy and abroad.  They are well-known for producing high quality wine, opening up new opportunities to appreciate and develop unique new terroirs with great winemaking potential.

Research and development has been an ongoing process for the family, such as selecting new clones of local and international varieties, experimenting with new techniques in the vineyards and vineyard altitudes and new approaches to fermentation and temperature control. They also experiment with traditional and innovative winemaking philosophies, using new types of oak for barrels, barrel size and age, and varying length of aging in the bottle before commercial release.

Antinori family walking in vineyards

We have demonstrated, over the years, that in Tuscany and in Umbria there was the possibility of producing excellent wines, widely recognized at an international level, which showed both elegance and finesse while maintaining their original character.  One of our main strengths is the fact that we are Tuscan or, if you prefer, our fundamentally Tuscan character”, says Piero Antinori.

Best Chilean Winery 2017, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Inaugurating the new category of “Extraordinary Winery Awards” by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Viña Errázuriz had the honor of being the first Chilean winery to receive the award Best Chilean Vineyard 2017“.

Eduardo Chadwick, President of Viña Errázuriz, commented: “Being considered one of the best Chilean wineries by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate is fantastic news. We are very honored with this nomination, and we believe that the nomination reflects the consistency in the high quality of our wines along with the commitment to elaborate the best wines of our terroirs, and to be recognized as a world-class producer. ”

ERRAZURIZ WINERY

Just north of Santiago, Chile’s capital, Errazuriz Winery is located in the Aconcagua Valley.  The valley’s beauty and its mild Mediterranean climate more than likely attracted Don Maximiano Errazuriz’s attention, inspiring him to establish his winery in 1870.  Easy access to water for irrigation and the volcanic soils, make Aconcagua Valley a viticultural paradise. From the mountains to the coast, it’s the origin of many renowned Chilean wines.

HISTORY

Founder, Don Maximiano Errázuriz Valdivieso

Founder, Don Maximiano Errázuriz Valdivieso

Don Maximiano Errázuriz founded Viña Errázuriz in 1870. With his innovative and pioneering spirit, he planted the first French grape varieties in the Aconcagua Valley. His initiative and creativity were handed down to his descendants, who consolidated the winery and positioned their wines among the world’s most noteworthy.  Errazuriz’s family winery has shaped history, currently one of the best examples of successful winemaking in Chile.

CELLAR DOOR 1870 WINERY

For over a century, Viña Errázuriz’s Historic Winery in Panquehue has remained a symbol of the forward thinking vision of its founder, Don Maximiano Errázuriz. Its construction began in 1870, under the guidance of a French winemaker, took over 14 years and incorporated the latest technology at the time.

Winery tasting room

Built in 1870, Viña Errazuriz’s historic tasting room, located in basement of the winery.

The winery was built as a two-story structure. The excavation and construction of its huge cellar rooms alone took five years. The thick underground walls, built with bricks and mortar, have stood the test of time and have allowed the wine to be kept in large casks made of raulí (a native Chilean tree) at a constant temperature of 53 to 57°F.

Still in use today, the winery houses a historic collection of wines. There are about 400 bottles of each of the vineyard’s iconic wines, which provides an opportunity to experience the vineyard’s evolution through the years.

DON MAXIMIANO ICONIC WINERY

In 2009 the need to project itself into the XXI century and to search for wines of an even higher quality, inspired Viña Errázuriz to start building a new winery devoted exclusively to its high-end wines.  The integration of cutting edge technologies has gone hand-in-hand with sustainability and environmental protection, thus paying homage to Don Maximiano’s vision and courageous spirit.

Don Maximiano Winery Chile

Don Maximiano Winery, Chile

With a capacity to produce over 91,000 gallons, the new Don Maximiano Icon Winery was designed by architect Samuel Claro and built completely with bleached concrete. Its main body is underground and its spiral shape allows for the movement of fruits and liquids by means of gravity and to capture the refreshing breezes from the valley. To maintain adequate levels of temperature and illumination the building harnesses geothermal and solar energy, which are completely environment friendly.

The winery was officially opened in October 2010 with more than 100 guests from around the world, including leaders of the wine industry and press.

Cliff Lede Vineyards and FEL wines – Stags Leap District of Napa Valley

Cliff Lede Vineyards was established in 2002 by Canadian born Bordeaux enthusiast, Cliff Lede, following the acquisition of a sixty acre estate in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. With a focus on producing wines from estate vineyards, Lede tapped David Abreu, considered the best viticulturist in Napa Valley, to replant the vineyards. Lede decided to name each vineyard block after some of his favorite rock songs and albums—from “My Generation” to “Dark Side of the Moon,” creating what is known today as the Cliff Lede Vineyards “Rock Blocks.”

Whole Lotta Love vineyard sign

In 2005, a state of the art, 25,000 square foot winery and cave system was etched into a hillside overlooking the estate vineyards. Not only did Cliff create a beautiful property, he also assembled an unrivaled team that shares his passion for quality. Today, Winemaker Christopher Tynan crafts Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, with the flagship, Poetry Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the steep eastern hillside portion of the estate.

Cliff Lede and FEL wine bottles

In 2015, Cliff Lede vineyards were awarded with a Napa Green certification which focuses on farming and production methods that meet and exceed more than twenty local, state, and federal “best practices.” Cliff Lede wines are an exuberant expression of Napa Valley vineyards and reflect the natural harmony and balance of sustained vineyard management.Napa Green Award plaques

Breggo Cellars was renamed FEL Wines as an homage to Cliff’s mother Florence Elsie Lede, who dabbled in home winemaking. Two years later, the Lede Family acquired the Savoy Vineyard, a benchmark vineyard for Anderson Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In addition to the Savoy bottlings, FEL Winemaker Ryan Hodgins crafts Anderson Valley appellation Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris, and a collection of vineyard designate Pinot Noirs from select vineyards within the Anderson Valley and Sonoma Coast.

In 1998 Nick and Yolyn, established their own line of wines with the release of Goldschmidt Vineyards. Having produced so many world class wines from around the globe, they knew exactly which vineyard sites they would choose to make Goldschmidt wines.

GOLDCHMIDIT VINEYARDS

For the Goldschmidt Vineyard brand they have created two distinct Cabernet Sauvignons, one from Alexander Valley in Sonoma and the other from Oakville in Napa Valley. The Cabernet Sauvignon is from two prestigious vineyards in Northern California, located on the northeastern slope in the Alexander Valley, and Game Ranch Vineyard, located on old river bottom on the eastern bench of the Silverado Trail. Both showcase the optimum silhouettes of Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley and Napa Valley.
