Michael David Winery Wine Tasting

About Michael David Winery:

The Phillips family and Lodi, California go way back. They have been farming this soil since the 1860’s and cultivating wine grapes since the early 20th century. Founders and brothers, Michael and David Phillips, are 5th generation grape growers who have raised their families in the vineyard; and now the 6th generation has joined the team, Mike’s son, Kevin, and daughter, Melissa. They embrace the importance of “leaving it better than you found it” for future generations. The Phillip’s family legacy and love of Lodi drive their focus on sustainability. Plus, they are pretty fun too.

David Phillips – Co-Owner and President
David Phillips

David Phillips

Early adopter of farmer’s markets, underage winemaker, long distance runner, UC Davis alum, champion of Lodi Wines, cork dork, brother, husband, father, and outdoor enthusiast. Working the family farm and vineyards from a young age, Dave returned to Lodi in 1989 after graduation, obtaining a job in the wine cork industry, and backpacking the world. Since then, he’s combined his love of Michael David Winery wines with his love of traveling by overseeing distribution from just one state to all 50, then onto 32 countries!

Michael Phillips – Co-Owner and Founder
Michael Phillips

Michael Phillips

Lifetime tractor driver, UC Davis grad, 5th generation Lodi grape grower, brother, husband, father, grandfather, jet-setter, un-traditionalist. Raised in Lodi, Mike worked harvests from a young age. After college, he wanted to show the wine world what Lodi was capable of and started planting unexpected varietals. In 1984, he opened a small tasting room at his parents’ farmstand. Today, you know that farmstand as Michael David Winery, and it’s helped put Lodi on the map as one of the finest wine regions in the world. Learn more about Dave, Mike, and their team here.

Lodi Rules:

“Some people like to say “rules were made to be broken.” We like to say “when rules are created to support and protect farmers, vintners, the land, your neighbors, and amazing wine… maybe you should stick with them.” – Michael David Winery

With over 100 “rules,” or practices geared towards environmental, social, and economic sustainability, the Lodi Rules certification helps both wineries and consumers to make better choices when it comes to making and drinking wine; the Phillips Family lives by these rules. These rules have been vetted by scientists, academics, and environmental groups worldwide, and are the most thorough set of sustainable viticultural standards in the entire state of California. Every year, Michael David Winery strives to make 100% of their wines Lodi Rules Certified. Learn more about Lodi Rules here.

Two Mountain Winery Wine Tasting

ABOUT TWO MOUNTAIN WINERY:

Two Mountain Winery is a family affair – owned and operated by brothers Matthew and Patrick Rawn, their family has been farming the rich soil of the Rattlesnake Hills area of Washington State for more than half a century. In 1951, Phil Schmidt established Schmidt Orchards with 40 acres of peaches, apricots, prunes, and apples. Today, the Rawn brothers continue that legacy through Two Mountain Winery and the estate farming operation. The small family winery produces a modest 10,000 cases annually, but is poised for growth under the leadership of the Rawn Brothers who believe great wine is the result of the perfect blend of elegance and fun. After purchasing Two Mountain Winery and Estate Vineyard from their late uncle Ron Schmidt’s estate in 2006, the brothers set out to put their own fingerprint on the family business by launching a new look for their classic, hand-crafted varietal wines.

Two Mountain Winery continues to produce approachable, handcrafted wines that are worth saving for that special occasion, but are accessibly priced for a casual dinner with family and friends. This family-owned operation draws on the experience of three generations who have farmed the rich soil of the Yakima Valley. The Rawn brothers oversee every aspect of the winemaking process from the grapes to the glass. Inspired by majestic Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams that form the breathtaking backdrop of the Estate Copeland Vineyard, their award-winning wines are a reflection of the perfect climate in which they were grown.

Matthew Rawn – Winemaker, Director of Sales and Marketing
Matt Rawn

Matthew Rawn

Matthew Rawn has been winemaker for Two Mountain Winery since its inception. He helped plant the estate vineyard with his uncle Ron Schmidt in 2000 and has produced Two Mountain’s wines since the first vintage in 2002. While the vineyard was growing, Matt honed his winemaking skills by working alongside neighboring Yakima Valley wine producers and learning their craft. A passionate advocate for the Washington wine industry, Matt manages sales and marketing for the winery and enjoys talking with wine retailers and restaurateurs about the state’s world-class wines. Matt also shares vineyard duties with his brother, Patrick. Matt holds a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business from Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont. and completed enology and viticulture courses at Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla, Wash.

Patrick Rawn – General Manager, Vineyard Operations
Patrick Rawn

Patrick Rawn

Patrick Rawn manages finances and daily operations for Two Mountain Winery and estate vineyard and shares vineyard management duties with his brother, Matt. After college, Patrick traveled the globe and spent extensive time in Europe. Patrick returned to the U.S. with plans to enter law school, but a six-month stint working for the family wine business took his career path in a new direction. Patrick’s passion for wine blossomed at Two Mountain Winery, and quickly grew into a full-fledged love affair. Patrick lives and works in the Yakima Valley, where he is a Yakima County Planning Commissioner and serves on the Yakima County Wine Tourism Consortium. Patrick holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in economics/international finance from the University of Washington in Seattle. Learn more about Matt, Patrick, and their team here.

ABOUT THE VINEYARDS:

Today Two Mountain Winery operates 300 acres of vineyards and 100% of their wines come from their estate acreage. Warm days and cool nights provide the Yakima Valley with near-perfect growing conditions, allowing both white and red grape varietals to fully express their classic characteristics. The Cascade Mountain Range provides a wonderful rain-shadow effect on the vineyard. Two Mountain Winery has warm sites averaging to 2980-degree days with an ideal 190-day growing season and annual precipitation between six to seven inches total. ABOUT THE WINERIES AND THEIR WINEMAKERS:

Waterkloof Wine Estate:

In 1993 Paul Boutinot commenced his search for a vineyard site with the potential to produce truly fine wine with a defining sense of origin. The classic areas, capable of growing naturally balanced grapes such as the Cote d’Or, Chablis, Paulliac, Barolo, etc. were either unavailable or unattainable (rich men’s toys), so he had to find a new classic. It took ten years to narrow the search down to a small area on the south-facing slopes of the Schapenberg, overlooking False Bay in the Cape. As soon as he was led up a steep ravine opening out into a hidden amphitheater of potential, all his experience and intuition told him: THIS IS IT! Waterkloof was born, and the hard work began.

Nadia Langenegger of Waterkloof Winery

Winemaker Nadia Langenegger

Meet the Winemaker:
Nadia Langenegger grew up in Somerset West in the Western Cape of South Africa. After graduating with a degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Stellenbosch, she completed her first student harvest at Flagstone in South Africa, then went on to harvest in Australia, France, and New Zealand. At the end of 2008, she joined the Waterkloof team as assistant wine maker to Werner Engelbrecht; in 2013 she was appointed as Winemaker, when Werner left Waterkloof.

Hermanuspietersfontein (HPF) Wines:

In the early 1800’s farmers imported a teacher named Hermanus Pieters to teach their children Dutch, the forerunner of Afrikaans. He would be paid in sheep which he grazed at a fountain under the Milkwood trees near the sea. The spot soon became known as Hermanus Pieter’s Fountein (HPF).  In 1855, the village was named after him – Hermanuspietersfontein.  Fast forward 100 years later, a wine cellar baring his name is the longest Afrikaans name for a cellar in the world and using Afrikaans-only wine names.  Operationally, their 350-ton urban winery combines European mindset and gravity concept to minimize handling and intervention in the winemaking process. “Good earth makes better wine” is HPF’s winemaking philosophy, the expression and sense of place is the soul of Sondagskloof.

Wilhelm Pienaar Winemaker

Wilhlem Pienaar, Head Winemaker

Meet the Winemaker:
Wilhelm Piennar, having 10 years of experience and traveled to more than 50 countries, has gained valuable knowledge and insights into the wine industry. With a double Masters degree in agriculture at Stellenbosch University and University of Montpellier, Wilhelm is the Managing Director and Head Winemaker of HPF wines.  “Winemaking is not just a job, it is a passion and a lifestyle.  And the essence of it, for me, is for the winemaker to remain true to his or her intuitions.” – Wilhelm Piennar

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate:

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is a 200 hectare lifestyle farm and exclusive luxury estate situated in Walker Bay, Hermanus. Overlooking the Bot River Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean these unusual maritime conditions ensure that this unique terroir produces outstanding quality grapes.

Winemaker Johann Fourie

Winemaker Johann Fourie

Meet the Winemaker:
Johann Fourie was introduced to the world of wine as a student during his studies at Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch. After extensive wine estate visits and experiencing the passion winemakers have for their craft, he changed the direction of his studies to specialize in winemaking and set out to become one of South Africa’s leading winemakers. With an incredible list of awards, and stints in more than nine international countries, Johann is now the Head Winemaker for Benguela Cove Wine Estate, situated in Walker Bay, South Africa.

Brew Cru:

Brew Cru is dedicated to cool-climate wines from the Cape South Coast, sourcing wines from maritime wine wards such as Elim and Walker Bay.  Both vineyards share hardened landscapes with constant gusts of Atlantic sea winds, which contributes to a cooler climate. This unique terroir provides extended ripening periods and extremely low yields resulting in small, intensely flavored berries with great potential.

Winemaker Bertus Fourie

Winemaker Bertus Fourie

Meet the Winemaker:
Bertus Fourie is a legend in the world of creating distinctive wines. Known, as ‘Starbucks’, for his creation of the now iconic Coffee Style Pinotage. This Swartlander, born in Malmesbury, always loved wine, but never thought of it as a career. When arriving at University to study medicine, he found that due to an ‘administrative error’ he had not been admitted. Having worked in a cousin’s vineyard, he enrolled to study Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch; and as they say, the rest is history.

Food Pairing Ideas for Goldschmidt Wines

Goldschmidt-Vineyards-Logo

If you’re joining us for the Virtual Wine Tasting event with Nick Goldschmidt on August 12th on Zoom, here are some great food pairing ideas to enhance your tasting experience with Goldschmidt wines.

TIP: Pull white wines out of the refrigerator 30 minutes hour prior to serving so it is closer to wine cellar temperature of 50-58 degrees. Sparkling wines should be served even colder at 40-50 degrees.

Singing Tree ChardonnaySinging Tree Chardonnay
Russian River, California

This Chardonnay is lightly oaked and so fresh, the fruit really shines.  It pairs beautifully with crab or artichoke dip or hummus on soft pita or crispy bruschetta.   Greens with apples, jicama or pears, nuts and vinaigrette made with the wine.  Fish and chicken with less bold/overly spicy sauces to allow the wine to be tasted and not covered up.   Baked brie en croute.  Whole wheat linguine with browned butter panko crumbs, toasted pine nuts, shaved Parmesan & parsley (can add splash of lemon juice garlic, and protein of your choice.)

Boulder Bank Sauvignon BlancBoulder Bank Sauvignon Blanc,
Marlborough, Australia

From a dried up river bed vineyard in the Rapaura region, this wine pulls some salinity into the minerality and has a hint of sweetness on the finish.  Tart, slightly sweet and salty combos pair well.  Try with grilled 1/2 fresh apricots with goat cheese, thyme, honey and candied walnuts or baked or grilled prosciutto wrapped shrimp or scallop on dill aioli.  Or try pan seared Walleye with sweet pea risotto and crispy Pancetta.  Spinach pie with Tahini sauce pairs nicely too. Or try a flatbread with roasted/grilled vegetables with feta cheese & lemon miso sauce.

Forefathers Sauvignon BlancForefathers Sauvignon Blanc,
Marlborough, Australia

This wine super aromatic, concentrated and viscous, so it likes a little fat/richness in food to meet it head to head.  Sweetness falls on the mid-palate (like the proteins) and the long finish & racy acidity complements the tartness from cheese and lemon is the perfect finish to pull the wine and the foods together.  Pair with creamy smoked trout (or crab) and corn chowder or a fattier fish such as grilled salmon or sea bass with lemon zest.  Ahi tuna and avocado tartare with salted pita chips.  Chilled Mediterranean grain bowl with chickpeas, kalamata olives, sundried tomato, a bit of red onion, chopped fresh parsley, and feta cheese, with lemon, olive oil and splash of the wine.

TIP: Serve reds lightly chilled (especially for the warm night on the patio)…chill them down for about 30 minutes in the fridge. Average house temp of 70 degrees or higher does not do justice to your red wines. They are at their best when consumed between 55 and 65 degrees.

Chelsea Merlot Goldschmidt wine bottleChelsea Merlot,
Alexander Valley, California

Pair with grilled or smoked cherry marinated chicken breast or pork loin. Also yummy with classic Cassoulet, sweet Italian sausage and mozzarella.  Yummy with stuffed grilled Portobella mushroom caps…and always great with a traditional ground sirloin burger or lentil mushroom burger.  Will also pair with lasagna or chili, just be easy on the heat/spice.

Katherine Cabernet SauvignonKatherine Cabernet Sauvignon,
Alexander Valley, California

With moderate tannins and excellent food acidity, this wine pairs best with sauces that have earthy and herbal characteristics that are typical of Alexander Valley wines. Crispy pork belly, with black cherry Au jus,  Ribeye tips with Gorgonzola sauce, variety of aged cheeses,  wild mushroom gratin, or beef wellington. Or try with short ribs with wine reduction with touch of dark molasses or wild Game Sausage.

Hilary Goldschmidt wine bottleHilary Cabernet Sauvignon,
Oakville, California

This wine’s focused and lush tannins on the mid-palate pull it all together…which is why Oakville Cabernet is often considered to be the BEST Cabernet Sauvignon from California by mainstream wine critics and high end consumers.

Pair with traditional seared filet of beef, Osso Bucco, or lamb lollipops with rosemary demi-glaze. Beef Bourguignon. Leaner, rich and tender cuts and most importantly the sauce should not overpower to allow the wine to shine when combined with the food.

Forefathers Cabernet wine bottleForefathers Cabernet Sauvignon,
Alexander Valley, California

Alexander Valley vineyard is very steep so it is dry farmed, resulting in tiny berries. Small grapes = higher skin-to-pulp ratio and all the flavor in wine comes from the skins.  This wine is just pure, decadent, highly extracted and exotic Alexander Valley Cabernet.  On opening it may seem wound up…it is best to allow it to breathe for a couple hours or give it some air in your glass.  The nose is stunning.  Dubbed  “Your Ribeye Wine” but it is also stunning with a nice little chunk of aged Gouda or 10-year Cheddar.

TIP: Hey not to be Debbie-Downer….though many of us LOVE dark chocolate… this is NOT a true “pairing” for red wine unless it is nearly void of sugar.  The sugar in chocolate desserts completely coats the tongue and overpowers the fruit in the wine, only tasting alcohol in the wine.  Port wines makes a much better “pairing” for chocolate and aged, full flavor cheese is a better dessert offering for red wines. Yes, the chocolate tastes so good with the last wine of the tasting…BUT, please taste and enjoy your reds on their own.  First, get to know the wine and then maybe as you get closer to the bottom of the glass, then pop that chocolate if you must 😉 HAPPY SIPPING EITHER WAY!

THE HESS STORY

Since 1844, the Hess family’s unparalleled passion and pioneering spirit has spanned across five generations, leading up to Donald Hess. Donald Hess became interested in mountain winegrowing during a trip to the Napa Valley in the mid-1970’s.  He discovered that Mount Veeder’s vineyards had the ideal combination of soils and microclimates to produce grapes of distinctive character and flavor.  Thus, began The Hess Collection’s love for unique mountain and valley fruit expressed through artfully crafted wines. Learn more about their story.

The Next Generation

As fifth generation Hess family, Tim and Sabrina consider themselves stewards of the land and the brand. They continue Donald’s legacy carrying on the tradition and his commitments to craft world-renowned wines from the Napa Valley while introducing wines that speak to the vision of their future. Together, they continue to advance the Hess Collection as one of the premiere family-owned and family-led companies in Napa Valley. Charles Smith Wines, Washington

Please join us, as we Taste, Learn and Enjoy these ‘rockin’ wines from Charles Smith.  We’ll be tasting through several of his labels.  Be sure to RSVP at your local WineStyles location or reserve tickets on Eventbrite.com

Located in Walla Walla, Charles Smith opened his first winery, K Vintners.  His first release, K Syrah, initiated the style of winemaking that Charles continues today: small lots of single vineyard Syrahs and field blends of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo, and Viognier, all of which are hand-picked, fermented with naturally occurring yeasts and basket pressed.

In 2008, his K Vintners was recognized by Wine & Spirits magazine as one of the “Best New Wineries of the Last Ten Years,” and as “Winery of the Year” in the annual wine buying guide. His wines continue to receive recognition from wine publications such as Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, and Wine & Spirits with 98 scores of 95 points and above, and 386 scores of 90 points and above.

Winemaker Charles Smith is the only person to have received Winemaker of the Year distinctions by both Wine Enthusiast (2014) and Food & Wine (2009).

ABOUT THE WINEMAKER

Growing up just outside of Sacramento, California, Charles Smith began craving worldly travel at a young age.  In 1989 Charles decided to move to Denmark and spent nine years managing rock bands and concert tours throughout Europe. Wining and dining on the road ultimately triggered the career he has today. In 1999, he moved back to the States, landing in the Pacific Northwest. He opened up a wine shop on Bainbridge Island, just across the Puget Sound from downtown Seattle.  On a road trip, he passed through the small town of Walla Walla and met a French winemaker. The two men discovered their common passion for great Syrah and Charles was convinced to move to Walla Walla and make his own juice. December 2001, Charles released his first wine, 330 cases of the 1999 K Syrah. The Walla Walla Valley was now his home.

Wines of Substance
In 2017, he unveiled a new name for his international company and vast portfolio – Wines of Substance.
SIXTO: The Chardonnay-only label from Charles Smith and Brennon Leighton. Inspired by the story of musician Sixto Rodriguez, Charles similarly wanted to resurrect something that was always great, but was waiting to be rediscovered – as in the old Chardonnay vines in Washington State. Being the sixth label that Charles created (sextus translates to “sixth” in Latin), the name SIXTO was a perfect fit.
Substance Wines

SUBSTANCE: The newest chapter in history books of Charles Smith and his wines.   With a single-minded vision to produce the best value-priced Cabernet Sauvignon, Substance label was born.  Using traditional winemaking, natural fermentations and barrel-aging, each wine is made in small batches ensuring integrity.

Casasmith winesViNO CASASMITH: Italian inspired and locally produced, ViNO was created by Charles Smith in 2010 with the inaugural release of a 100% Pinot Grigio. This is in keeping with the vision of producing Italian varietals with the same integrity as they would be produced in Italy. Hand-made wines that are a great value and delicious to drink.
