ABOUT THE BREWERY:
Moor Beer was reborn in 2007 when Californian Justin Hawke purchased the defunct business and created what has become one of the world’s top rated breweries. Named from the Levels and Moors area of Somerset where the brewery originated, Moor Beer moved to central Bristol behind Temple Meads Rail Station in 2014.  Moor Beer’s natural carbonation with live yeast is at the heart of everything they brew. It’s what makes their beers vegan friendly and what gives them such an enhanced flavor, aroma and mouthfeel that simply can’t be replicated. Santa’s Butt
English Porter

Oxfordshire, England

This special holiday porter is made for winter – rich and warming, the way they like it at the North Pole. It was inspired by this famous line from a well-loved children’s storybook: “And Santa sat on his great butt, enjoying a hardy brew…” In case you find that amusing, the brewer hastens to point out that “butt” refers to a certain sized barrel customarily used for beer, in fact, holding 108 imperial gallons. Back in the day, it was quite normal for a brewery to store its beer in a large butt.  Still snickering, eh? Get your mind out of the gutter, or Santa will be skipping your home entirely this year.

ABV: 6% alcohol / volume
IBU: N/A
Style: Porter – English

Beer Style: Dark and Roasty

Lump of Coal
Dark Holiday Stout
Oxfordshire, England

Yet another bummed-out holiday? Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout is liquid consolation. It’s a deep, rich, sweetly rewarding stout to take the edge off of that grim family gathering, that cheerless annual festival of alienation. This brew is as dark as it gets, as black as the lump of coal you’ll be getting for Christmas. Because, let’s face it, you’ve been pretty bad this year.

ABV: 7.5% alcohol / volume
IBU: 34
Style: Strong Stout

Beer Style: Dark and Roasty

Winter’s Ale

Oxfordshire, England

‘Tis a heavy hand what adds the hops to this festive golden ale. Truth be told, there’s near to three pounds of fresh hops goes in every barrel of this treasured brew. Pull up a sturdy chair, let’s fill up yer best flagon with the season’s finest natural ale, and we’ll tell you a dark tale of elf and woe. ‘Ere’s to your elf!

ABV: 4.5% alcohol / volume

Style: Pale Ale
Beer Style: Malty and Sweet

ABOUT THE BREWERY:
Located in South Oxfordshire, Ridgeway Brewing was founded in 2002 by Peter Scholey, former head brewer at Brakspear and his wife, Vanda. With their beers, they hope to create lasting experiences with “cutting edge tradition” – a match between heritage and modern tastes and technologies. 35K-Bottle-ShotAgainst the Grain
35K
Stout
Louisville, Kentucky

Not your typical “Jelly of the Month Club” beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa, coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provide a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

ABV: 7.0% alcohol / volume
IBU: 26
Style:
Stout – Milk / Sweet

Beer Style: Malty & Sweet

The Brown Note-Bottle ImageAgainst the Grain
The Brown Note
American Brown Ale
Louisville, Kentucky

The brown ale to end all brown ales. Enjoy it, because there is no longer any reason to drink another. You’ve reached the pinnacle. A healthy blend of traditional British malts give this popular style a semi-sweet, biscuity, slightly roasted flavor. Oats thicken the mouthfeel, and a handful of specialty malts add complex chocolate, toffee, and caramel notes. The hops are mostly traditional, earthy British hops, but they cocked it up a bit with some Cascade late in the boil, “just to show those snooty Brits that we don’t approve of that Constitutional Monarchy crap.” – Against the Grain team.

ABV: 5.0% alcohol / volume
IBU: 20
Style:
Brown Ale – English

Beer Style: Malty & Sweet

ABOUT THE BREWERY:
Against the Grain Brewery is Louisville’s first brewer-owned brewery and, like most worthwhile undertakings, the product of dissatisfaction with the status quo. They maintain a diverse array of beers covering all of the major categories of beer flavor while generating an endless stream of innovative new brews. Essentially, they are tired of the regular old ‘stuff.’ At Against The Grain, the team has thrown the traditional mode of thought (producing the same thing over and over, some may call it consistency) out the window and shifted their energy to producing amazing beer consistently, which can be any given style or twist on it. ABOUT FAIR STATE BREWING COOPERATIVE:
Fair State Brewing Cooperative started on the rugby pitch, where founders Evan Sallee, Niko Tonks, and Matt Hauck first met while playing for rival teams. Later, they formed a friendship and took their love of home-brewing to a greater goal of founding a brewery. The friends believed there was too large of a gap between home-brewer and owning a brewery, and thus decided to build a co-op model to allow consumers to be more involved in operations. On September of 2014, First State Co-Op became the first cooperatively-owned brewery in Minnesota and the third in the country. Learn more about the brewery here, and follow them on Untappd.

May Beer Club: Iowa

BeerClubLogoPearDugges Bryggeri
Pear Single Fruit Sour Series
Landvetter, Sweden

For some beers, Dugges Bryggeri (Dugges Brewery) decides to showcase a specific flavor to really let it shine; and that’s exactly what they did with their Pear beer. They made a puckering sour beer then added pear… and a lot of it!

BeerStyles: Sour, Tart & Funky
Style: Sour
ABV: 4.5% alcohol / volume
Ingredients: Contains barley
Availability: One-time brew

“We’ve done a lot of sour beer here at Dugges. We’ve done some many taste variants with fruit and spices that we’ve lost count. And, we’ve played around with malt bills, yeasts, levels of alcohol and acidity to the point that we almost though we’d tried everything.
One thing we hadn’t done though, weirdly enough, was to focus on one single fruit; to methodically go through fruit by fruit to see how they work and would taste in a sour beer. So, that’s how this new single fruit series started. Pear is the first fruit out but there’ll be many more. Cheers!” – Dugges Bryggeri

Big Barrel Licorice IdjitDugges Bryggeri
Big Barrel Licorice Idjit
Landvetter, Sweden

This is a big and bold Imperial Stout. Dugges Brewery has made this Stout bolder than most by brewing it with licorice, then aging it in bourbon barrels.

BeerStyles: Dark & Roasty
Style: Stout
ABV: 14% alcohol / volume
Ingredients: Contains barley, rye, and oats
Availability: One-time brew

“Idjit is one of those beers that we’ve done forever. A beer that started out as a horrible experiment. Then became our staple 9.5% ABV Imperial Stout. After a while we remade it up to 12% ABV, renaming it Big Idjit, jokingly calling it a ’Scandinavian Session Stout’. Big idjit is the perfect beer for barrel aging and refining. In fact, several barrel aged versions have carried the name Perfect Idjit. This version is taking it a step further, refining the beer after barrel aging. In this case by adding just the right amount of licorice to the beautiful bourbon barrel aged beer. What’s more perfect than perfect? Perfecter (it’s a word) Idjit. Good night!” – Dugges Bryggeri

Mikael Dugge Engström

Mikael Dugge Engström

ABOUT THE BREWERY:
In 2002 Mikael Dugge Engström, the founder, CEO and Brew Master of Dugges Bryggeri, had a meeting with an Englishman. What was said in that meeting has since been forgotten, but was said to be the reason Dugges Bryggeri is around today. The Englishman sold filters for brewing beer, as well as second hand breweries – this got Mikael to thinking about how awesome it would be to own his own brewery. After years of research, visits to other breweries, making friends and asking all the right questions, Mikael starting buying parts needed to build is own small brewery. In 2005, he opened the doors to Dugges in Mölndal. Learn more about his story here.
